Monday, Kentucky Wildcats junior Nick Richards was named both the NCAA March Madness player of the week and South Eastern Conference Co-Player of the week along with Alabama’s Kira Lewis Jr.
UK Athletics points out, “It’s the second time Richards has won a national player of the week honor and the second time he’s earned the conference player of the week award. Following his performance vs. Louisville on Dec. 28, he won both U.S. Basketball Writers Association and SEC honors.”
These most recent accolades come after Richards led the Wildcats to a pair of victories this past week. Tuesday Richards scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Kentucky defeat the Georgia Bulldogs. Then Saturday, Richards recorded a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds to guide the Wildcats to an overtime victory on the road against No. 18 Texas Tech.
In total, Richards averaged 22.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in the two games.
With another big week, Richards continues to make a case for the SEC Player of the Year award. He is averaging 14.3 points this season with 8.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. This comes after he averaged just 4.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in the first two years of his college career.
Richards and the Wildcats will be back in action Wednesday when they play host to the Vanderbilt Commodores at 6:30 p.m. EST.
