The Kentucky Wildcats were shutout for a second straight day Saturday as they fell 3-0 to the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks.
With the loss, UNCW handed Kentucky their first home series loss of the 2020 season.
UNCW struck first blood in the top of the third by playing small ball. Jackson Meadows hit a leadoff single and made his way home after reaching second on a Mason Hazelwood balk, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kip Brandenburg and scoring on a single from Zachary Bridges.
With two out in the top of the fifth, the Seahawks extended their lead as Matt Suggs ripped a two-run double down the right field line put UNCW up 3-0.
As UNCW put runs on the board, Seahawks starting pitcher Landen Roupp kept the Kentucky bats quiet. Roupp tossed seven scoreless striking out five and allowing just two hits.
Adam Smith earned the save for the Seahawks by pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to lock down the UNCW victory.
Despite taking the loss, Hazelwood pitched a gem for the Wildcats to keep his team in the game. The southpaw dealt seven innings in which he allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine Seahawks.
Kentucky will look to salvage the final game of the series with UNCW Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
