As several schools’ across the nation have brought back their fall sport athletes, many have also seen COVID-19 appear in their team facilities.
This isn’t the case for the UK Football program as after all 108 players, 58 staff members essential for workouts” zero tested positive for the virus per a press release from UK Athletics.
In addition to the entire Football team testing negative, UK reported 42 student-athletes from the men’s basketball, volleyball and women’s soccer teams have gone through the initial COVID-19 screening process, which included a virus antibody test with three testing positive for having had prior infection.
Forty-one student-athletes and 21 staff members with those teams participated in diagnostic testing and three came back positive. The school reports those positive are in quarantine in accordance with CDC and local health department guidelines.
With case numbers low, the UK Athletics program will continue with their non-voluntary workouts. “UK Athletics will continue to actively monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19 and respond accordingly in collaboration with University of Kentucky leadership and the guidance of the Southeastern Conference, the press release stated. “UK Athletics plans to continue current mitigation strategies and evaluate the need for additional testing on a regular basis.”
