EKU’s head coach joined the Big Blue Insider to discuss the Colonels’ loss at Western Kentucky and preview their matchup in Lexington on Saturday. Mark Elder discussed the miscues that cost EKU a chance to make a comeback against the Hilltopers.
He pointed out that his team has a little bit less than half of their starters back from last years team. He labeled them as “green” when it comes to playing for EKU.
The Eastern coach was very complimentary of UK, “I think they are a complete football team.” He was particularly impressed with the defensive side of the ball, “I think they are exceptional on defense.” He has notice improvement from last year.”They’ve really taken a step forward as far as execution and physicality.”
It seemed that UK’s OLD/DEs Josh Allen and Denzil Ware stood out to Elder. He described them as, “bonafide national dudes, they’re NFL draft pick guys.”
Elder talked about UK’s QB Stephen Johnson, “He can either run or extend plays. You know he’s not just a run guy he’ll run extend the play then make you pay for that if you let him get out of the pocket.”
Some of the Colonel’s view the game as a rivalry, “They’re right down the road, so there’s a natural feel for EKU that it being 30 minutes away of feeling that Kentucky is a rival, even though we don’t play every year.”
