Kentucky Basketball did not go winless against Tennessee this week after all.
The Kentucky women’s basketball team started their journey in Greenville, South Carolina. Friday, the third-seeded Cats defeated the sixth-seeded Tennessee Lady Volunteers 86-65 in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals.
It was a magical night for SEC Player of the Year and Kentucky star Rhyne Howard. The sophomore scored 24 points with eight rebounds and four assists. On the night she shot 8-15 from the field, including 5-8 from the three-point line. With her final three-pointer of the night, Howard broke the Kentucky program single-season record for three-pointers in a single season, passing the previous record of 81 set by Sara Potts in 2005.
Howard wasn’t the only Wildcat who stepped up Friday. Tatyana Wyatt (14), Chasity Patterson (11) and Sabrina Haines (10) scored in double-figures. As a team, Kentucky shot an impressive 50.8% from the field.
Despite the loss, Lady Vols guard Jordan Horston put together a monster performance as she scored 24 points and grabbed four rebounds.
With the victory, Kentucky earned their first SEC Tournament win since they defeated Alabama in the second round of the 2018 Tournament and their first trip to the tournament’s semifinals since 2017.
Kentucky will take on the second-seeded Mississippi State Bulldogs in Saturday’s Semifinals at 7:25 p.m.
